Manufacturing employment continued the string of month-to-month gains that started in August of 2017. The November gain of 27,000 was almost equally balanced between gains in durable goods manufacturing (+15,000) and nondurables (+12,000). Over the past eleven months manufacturing employment has risen by 249,000, which is 11.2% of the total gain in private payroll employment. Indeed, of the eight sectors we follow closely in this section of the report, only health care has posted a larger cumulative gain in employment over the course of 2018.
Manufacturing hiring continues to be a bright spot as it moved further ahead on a broad front.
