The final component of the Elite Eight is truck transportation employment where we saw a gain of 4,500 persons. Based on what we read in the trade press about the need for more truck drivers, one might be surprised that the gains on this chart are not larger than what we see. It should be kept in mind that this category of employment refers to trucking companies. If a truck driver gets hired by Target, they get counted in retail employment.
Year-to-date, the gains here total 32,700 persons, and represent 1.5% of the gain in total private employment.
